August Bank Holiday

Did someone say 4 day weekend? Yes please!!

I love a Bank Holiday as much as the next person.. especially when I book the Friday off work as well.

Saturday, Tom and myself decided to go on a bit of an adventure in London. I’ve always felt very fortunate that I only live a 30 minute train journey away from being in London, and the older I’ve got, the more I’ve fallen in love with the city!

So our first stop was Old Spitalfields Market, just a 10 minute walk from Liverpool Street. We walked past so many beautiful stalls selling everything from pictures and wooden signs, to hats and sunglasses galore! I mean seriously how many sunglasses stands does one market need? We took our time just enjoying having a mosey around at what was on offer, then we decided to stop for some food. Some of the best food I’ve had, have been from food markets! We started by sharing a Quesadilla from this little Spanish stall. Whilst waiting, Tom noticed a Pulled Pork stand that we knew would be our next stop!

After the Quesadilla, we wondered around the next half of the market. Again, hats and sunglasses stands everywhere! However, we did find some really cute jewellery stools, I’m a sucker for anything that is shiny… I’m like a Magpie! After a while, we made our way back to the Pulled Pork House and ordered a Dirty Bagel. Although we ended up ordering ours in a panini instead of a bagel, so I guess we ordered a Dirty Panini… but that doesn’t have the same ring to it. When they were putting ours all together, they finished by placing a thick slice of cheese on top, and much to my amusement proceeded to pull out a miniature blowtorch and melted the cheese.. I was very much impressed!!!

It didn’t take us long to get through our sandwich, and yes it was as delicious as it looked! We carried on our adventure around the market and came across some interesting stands. My favourite was A Book on One Page , they create these beautiful posters based on a book i.e a picture of Alice from Alice in Wonderland, what was amazing about them is that the picture is made up from the story! I would strongly recommend looking them up, especially for the book lovers.

After our final wonder, I made a beeline for the Dutch Pancake stand I saw when we first entered the market. Oh my God they did not disappoint! 10 mini pancakes, covered in white chocolate and topped with strawberries!! I was the happiest girl in the world, honestly, I couldn’t stop smiling. Tom opted for a Belgian Chocolate Brownie that left him in a chocolate coma and a massive sugar crash! But we were very, very satisfied customers.

Our adventure then took us to Hamleys toy store, and yes, we acted like little children! It’s so hard not getting caught up in the excitement of it all. It’s like going to Disneyland and not having fun.. just impossible! We ventured to the top floor and made our way down to the basement, making sure we didn’t miss a single toy. I always love watching the magic tricks they perform, I find it all so fascinating. They were selling this giant pink unicorn (pictured below) which was the absolute best! If I didn’t have to get the train home I absolutely would have got it for myself!

After Hamleys, we wondered all the way up to Hyde Park in the hope of hiring some Boris Bikes to cycle around on.

This had to be the most stressful thing I’ve ever had to do.

After walking back and forth for a bit, Tom decided to download the App. This should have helped us… it didn’t. We managed to walk to 5 different docking stations before making our way to the other end of Hyde Park where we finally found one that a) had bikes and b) worked. I got one code, and Tom released his bike. Then I got another code and attempted to release my bike. But, it didn’t work… 4 codes later and a phone call to Customer Services and I finally got my bike… HOORAY!! We got the bikes and had a lovely cycle around Hyde Park in the hopes of burning off some of the food we ate earlier!

How do you like to spend your Bank Holidays? Do you prefer adventures and exploring new places? Or are you a blanket on the sofa watching movies kind of person?

Love, Sophie
